Success is defined in a myriad of ways, but usually it’s defined by each of us individually. If we go to college to get a PhD in Psychology and we achieve that goal, then it’s a success; if we grow up wanting to change the world by becoming an elected official and we are a US Senator now, then it’s a success; or if we were poor growing up and swore that one day we’d achieve the American Dream and be able to tell our rags to riches story…that might be one person’s idea of success. For me, Michael Parness, I just wanted to eat Shrimp. We didn’t have a lot growing up and when we went out to restaurants, which wasn’t often, me and my siblings were usually confined to the side of the menu that didn’t include Shrimp, Lobster or Steak. I swore when I grew up I’d be able to eat as much shrimp as possible. Of course, once I achieved that goal successfully, I then had other dreams and other goals. Success, after all, is all in the perception. We’ll deal with those issues, and more on – Trend Success.

Audrey Lavin has written, produced and directed many hours of nationally syndicated television and has created several long-running television shows. Lavin was raised “in the slums of Beverly Hills” and studied journalism at San Francisco State University. She transitioned from working as a freelance writer for various Rupert Murdoch publications to working as a writer/director for syndicated television news magazines programs “A Current Affair” and “Hard Copy.” Lavin went on to work on Henry Winkler’s “Sightings,” NBC’s “Unsolved Mysteries,” and created such shows as “Amazing Tails” for Animal Planet and “Power of Attorney” for Fox. She is credited with discovering and cultivating the television personality “Judge Joe Brown.” She also had a helping had in unearthing a Los Angeles favorite-K-Earth 101 radio personality Lisa Stanley. Lavin currently lives in Santa Monica, California, with her two children Charlie and Zoey and their many pets. How I Survived My Parents’ Big Scary Divorce is Lavin’s first children’s book.

Arthur Page was educated at the prestigious St. Albans School in Washington, DC and attended the University of Southern California. Currently living in Santa Monica, he is the father of Cary Grant Page – grandchild of legendary Cary Grant. Arthur writes a quotidian blog, SingleYoungDad.blogspot.com, about his experiences, comical musings, and stories with his son as well as tidbits that he learns as a single parent with joint custody.

‘ROCK CHICKS LIVE’ – Starring: Frankie Russo Performances by Rock Chicks: Sasha Papernik, Miki Taka, and Julie Hanus.

This Week’s Spotlight

Sasha Papernik – Classically trained at the Manhattan School of Music, Sasha started writing songs as a means of reaching a broader audience, and eventually hit upon a style all her own, where raucous, virtuosic piano riffs meet smooth, lovely melodies. The intelligent, introspective lyrics are the icing on the cake. Initially crafted as solo-piano pieces, the songs developed a driving energy after some fellow conservatory musicians became Sasha’s first touring band. She built her chops the time-honored way: by playing in every tri-state area venue she could log onto her schedule, learning to give hushed atmospherics to an attentive audience and hurl blistering soul-grabbers at those who were on their twelfth beer.

The music on “Claremont,” her debut album released on June 20th, 2009, is the result of all those nights of tight work with a band, cleaned up and made pristine. Listening to the often deceptively simple arrangements (drums, electric and steel guitar, discreet bass), it is immediately obvious that this is the work of a seasoned pro. In a field saturated with special effects and escalating dramatics, Sasha’s clear-as-a-bell songs bring with them a weird sense of recognition—this is how songs can actually be, this is what they can mean. Sasha’s songs may strike you as pop at first, yet you quickly become aware that they’re anything but; the boundaries are pushed way beyond that easy categorization. Sasha’s blend of traditional classical technique with pop and folk influences has produced a completely new, homegrown sound that moves indiscriminately from aching to foot-stomping, often within the same song.
